Greetings! Welcome to ADV

What is this about?
You are about to introduce yourself to an art of self-defense that will have a major positive impact on your life. The instructors (sensei) are here to share their knowledge and skills with you so that you can experience the incredible wisdom that they know already exists within your physical, mental and spiritual body.

What makes Aikido special?
Aikido (eye-key-doh) is a powerful, extremely effective and sophisticated martial art. But it is much, much more than that. Aikido teaches concepts and principals of living that carry over into your daily life.

Aikido works on the premise that all the major spiritual practices of the world are right; that the development of compassion and harmony both within the self and with other relationships is the only way to live a fulfilling and productive life.

The throws, the take-downs, and all the moves of Aikido are firmly rooted in this premise. As you learn the physical art, you will also strengthen the use of compassion and harmony in your daily life. You will learn how it feels to be grounded and calm in situations that may have thrown you before. You will develop a keen ability to read and respond appropriately to another's energy even before a verbal or physical attack is launched.

Is it hard?
As with anything of quality and worth, the mastery of Aikido takes time, but you won't care. You are going to have a lot of fun, make incredible discoveries, get frustrated, excited, joyful, renew your sense of wonder, learn patience and discover your self in a new way.

You will be challenged. You will learn to treat life as a dance, not as a battle; as a process, not as a goal. You will learn grace, center and coordination to a degree you may have only expected from professional dancers.

Yet Aikido is very much a martial art. It can be extremely firm or extremely gentle. It can happen so fast that the attacker can only remember thinking about the attack, or so slow that everything happens in slow motion. It is intense, but quiet laughter and smiles are as much a part of the art as the techniques themselves.

What else?
Aikido specializes in working with multiple attackers. Here at Aikido of Diablo Valley, the Japanese sword and staff are taught to all students. Understanding the use of energy is an integral part of the art, and while Aikido techniques never punish, they absolutely and definitively negate attacks.

Who takes Aikido?
Aikido is studied by law enforcement officers, accountants, actors, housewives, CEOs, behavioral therapists, musicians, doctors, programmers, writers, other martial artists - in short, by men and women of all ages, in all walks of life and all over the world.

How do I start?
